Retail Investing – Returned +0.9% Return in Mar 07

In article, “Wal-Mart (WMT) Stuck in a Retail Rut”, we analyzed retail stores for a covered calls stock options strategy. In article, “Retail Investing – Returns Sweet +4% Return in Jan 07”, we selected positions for expiration in March of 2007, and even though the overall stock market was very gloomy, the strategy still returned +0.9, not bad considering the S&P500 index was down over 5% during the same time period.

The retail sector has reported mediocre results over the last couple months, and a lot of the gloominess can be attributed to bad weather, but the bad weather is now behind us for the year (we hope), and so the retail sector has a bullish look to it.

The retail covered calls stock options positions found are all out-of-the-money and have potential returns ranging from 2.4% to 6.6% with downside protections ranging from 2.4% to 3.4%. The stock for a covered calls position can decrease and still remain profitable, as long as it does not decrease more than its downside protection.

To realize the maximum return for an out-of-the-money covered calls position, the stock price of the position must increase to or above the strike price of the call option.
