IBM Develops Revolutionary ‘Stackable’ Transistor

Moore’s Law is an observation made by Intel (INTC) co-founder Gordon Moore about the number of transistors manufacturers are able to fit on a given area of a circuit board. He said the density of transistors would double every 24 months. This, subsequently, would reduce the size of electronics and increase memory.

About four years ago, another Intel scientist, Paolo Gargini published a paper saying there was a fundamental limit to how small the silicon transistor could be. He expected at the current rate of technology progression, Moore’s Law would reach its limit around 2018.But the paper assumed all the circuit’s transistors lie on a 2D plane. It has long been theorized by scientists, transistors could be ‘stacked’ to utilize the third dimension. But, the technological hurdles were high and other technological prospects seemed brighter.

That was the case, until an announcement came this week of IBM’s development of a three dimensional chip. Transistors can now be stacked and Moore’s law appears to be in danger again. Ironically, this development may cause the rate of technological growth to exceed what Mr. Moore predicted in the mid 60’s.

This news was quietly mentioned on a low ranking article of the Wall Street Journal and other publications, but could have an enormous impact. Dave Lammers, director of research for WeSRCH.com, a Web site for semiconductor engineers based in Austin, Texas, said “This is a big step, this is a really historic move. This has been studied to death, but it’s the first time a company is saying, ‘We can connect two chips in the vertical direction.'”

The way IBM accomplished it was by etching tiny holes through the chip and then filling the holes with tungsten to make tiny vertical wires. This technology may appear in consumer electronics as early as next year.
